DIY Leather Place Cards

Just because we can’t have parties doesn’t mean I won’t host a special dinner for a friend! Lately I’m looking for any excuse to host something special, so last week I decided to try cooking a new recipe to host my good friend Kelly for dinner!

As I’ve made clear before, my apartment is not large! Sometimes it’s hard to eat dinner in my kitchen because I only have a coffee table. So I set up this cute little pop up in my room to give us more surface area!

I made us special little name cards just for fun and to give Kelly a little something to take home. I wish I could host all my friends, but in the midst of this pandemic keeping our close friends in the quarantine circle is super important. And honestly, we had the best time together hanging at home and enjoying a dinner that felt a little more special than just another day of takeout.

Here’s what you need to make these:

Step 1: I used a business card to measure the basic area. I flipped it over to the backside so no marker would show on the front.

Step 2: Use your metal ruler and rotary cutter or fabric scissors to follow along the insides of your lines, making sure to cut off the black marker. I also added little angles on the corners to make it feel like a tag.

Step 3: Use your hole puncher (I used a leather puncher) to create a hole on one side of the place card. This will be used to attach your leather card if you wish to include that extra detail.

Step 4: Add a swipe of your gold leaf paint as the base for your name. Be careful, as it is oil based and will come out very runny. Allow it to dry before using your white paint market to write the name. I suggest planning this out in advance with pencil so you don’t run out of space!

Step 5: Use about 8 inches of your leather cord to create this knot by pushing the loop through the tag hole, then bringing the ends of the cord back through and pulling it tight until it’s snug. This leaves the cord ends open for your guest to tie it onto whatever they would like.

And that’s all! Use this DIY as a perfect place card, or even as a luggage tag if you want to make it a little more complex. Happy Crafting!
