Thankful for Canada

I’m sure you already know this, but Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving a month earlier than Americans. Also, Canadians have a very different focus on Thanksgiving. Canadian Thanksgiving is a celebration of the harvest. For this, every year we gather for a family dinner serving our favorite Thanksgiving classics and using the season to guide our farmer’s market hauls.

My favorite thing about Toronto in the fall is seeing the foliage change. It’s pretty remarkable to see the trees all through the city changing to the most beautiful colors like mustard yellow, bright orange and fire red. We love calling out all of the striking colors to each other as we drive around.

I’m often home for Canadian Thanksgiving as it’s also Columbus Day weekend so we always have that Monday off too. Either My Aunti Marissa or Sister Mandy host but this year...I GET TO HOST AHHHHHHH.  I’m so excited.

Mandy has of course pulled the most fabulous inspo images for us to plan our flowers around and for the tableware, we’re using a black, white and gold palette. I just so happened to bring my plaid cloth napkins with me to Toronto which go so perfectly within our setting!

Last but not least is the menu. We go with the classics but spice things up with interesting flavors like maple syrup and nutmeg. This year, since I get to host Canadian Thanksgiving for the first time ever (!!) I am going to hit up a farmer’s market that my sister always raves about called Brickworks. It’s Saturday mornings and has a variety of local farmers selling fresh and seasonal food. I have my shopping list all ready to go and can’t wait to load up on a haul of goodies to cook with.
