DIY Tassel Pom Pom Keychain

So a few weeks ago, Seri came to me and said "OKAY CRAFTY MAGGIE, I'm ready to put your skills to the test." She was chosen to style a dinner for Munchkin at the Alt. Summit, and we suggested a hand crafted personalized gift for each guest. We wanted to make something that was on-trend, in Munchkin brand colors, and an item they could actually take home to enjoy.

When Seri was planning the table design for the dinner, she decided to place a Munchkin sippy cup at each guest's seat. We came up with the idea to hang each guests name card by the top of cup, and what better item to hang than a key chain?!

I feel like I'm seeing tassels, pom poms and leather everywhere these days I wanted to combine them. Here's what you need for this DIY project:

  1. Fake leather: We got ours cheap in The Garment District of NYC, but here's a great option from Amazon.
  2. Metallic sticker letters: We got this set at Paper Presentation, but here is a similar option.
  3. Pom Poms: Amazon, of course!
  4. Krazy Glue: Your local drug store!
  5. Yarn: Michael's
  6. White Beads: Etsy
  7. Key Chain Hardware: Amazon
  8. Needle with a large eye: Amazon

Step 1: Cut a piece of your leather about 6" long and 4" tall. Then cut small "fringe" pieces in straight lines from the bottom of your piece, about 3" long.

Step 2: Cut a small piece of leather about 1.5" long and .5" wide, add a dab of glue on the ends, and fold in half. Then add more glue on the outside of the loop and place it all the way to the edge of your large piece of fringe.

Step 3: Roll your loop across the leather, adding dabs of Krazy Glue near the top as you go. This way, the leather will stick as you roll it.

Step 4: To secure the whole tassel, cut a small strip of leather about 2" long and tie it around the top, using small dabs of Krazy Glue underneath and on top of the knot so it doesn't come undone.

Step 5: Using your large eye needle, thread the yarn through and pull it through 3 pom poms in colors of your choice.

Step 6: Next, pull one end of the yarn through the top of your tassel loop, tie a knot, and use some crazy glue to secure the knot before cutting off the excess yarn.

Step 7: Thread your beads on top of the stacked pom poms.

Step 8: Bring the top of your yarn through the keychain loop and pull the knot through as close to the beads as possible.

Step 9: Pull your clip through the keychain.

Step 10: Finally, cut out a heart (or shape of your choice) and personalize it. Then punch a hole in your leather piece and pull it through the keychain loop.

We are so happy with how these turned out. Natalie and I made 40 of them total and it took a LONG time, but if you're just making one for you, it's an easy project that shouldn't take more than an hour or so.

Happy crafting!
